grand mal : clandestine songs

 Grand_Mal_-_Clandestine_Songs_cover

yes. yes. yes.

i realise that the groove of the ireallylovemusic blog is erratic and a mess.

one minute it’s all about sample based dance pop, the next fucked up dub, before swinging over to some long forgotten pop gem.

sorry, i cant explain how and why these things happen the way they do, tis just my messed up head and various movements of the inner coil.

so, given that i have many times said how guitar based rock-n-roll does little for my spirits these days, why is it that news of a new grand mal album makes my heart spring with joy ?

well, for a start, the mainstay of the band, bill whitten, has a vocal style that’s both lazy and warm, but still with that edge of nonchalant slacker cool, while using the best fuzzed up guitars this side of a lost bowie classic.

not to mention the fact that bill often calls upon his long standing mastering/producing buddy dave fridmann meaning that the results always sound gorgeous.

the last i heard of grand mal was when i received an email from bill a few years ago with a pointer to a few demos, one of which was called clandestine song which revised the rocking sound of their bad timing album, as opposed to his more mellow side that was given an airing on the lost classic, love is the best con in town (trust me, one day mojo will do one of their buried treasure features on the album).

either way, i can’t wait to hear the finished result.
