nearly 2 years since the amazing out there, (reviewed : here) malcolm cattos psych jazz collective heliocentrics come back with a fantastic follow up release.
comprising of remixes, exclusives, and guest vocals, these 11 tracks were originally spread across three somewhat limited 12″ eps meaning that most of us missed out.
subsequently, stones throw have pressed up this selection of the tracks featured on the 12″ for the japanese market, and have made a few copies available to the rest of the world.
and, despite my current avoidance of all things hip hop, the presence of established mcs such as doom, guilty simpson, vast aire, and percee p actually provides more focus to the spaced out grooves.
previously unreleased gems such as the freeform sax chaos of the oracle, the sublime distorted bass beauty of space time girl, the funk heavy flutes of the gorn, or the 5 minute closer with excess of guitars and found vocal samples, vibration of the fallen angel, make this compilation sound like a solid well sequenced album, and one that compliments the source album perfectly.
summary : if you are in the market for drawn out space jazz funk jams that owe as much to the downtempo sample heavy era of dj shadow as they do to bitches brew weirdness of miles davis, then i suggest you track this down.
sharpish.
