jazzing things up

over the last few days i have opened up my windoze live writer application several times to post whatever came into my head onto the blog, only for me to realise that there was sweet fanny adams to tell you about.

i mean, you’re not interested in the small matter that in the last 7 days i have hardly listened to anything else but miles davis and david axelrod albums are you ?

thought not.

now, don’t get me wrong, i have over the years gone online and slagged off anything that veers towards the jazz world, so i am very aware of the walking cliche that i am probably becoming, but i care not, like a politician i am allowed to do a playlist u-turn whenever i feel like it.

in other words, a 40+ year old man, ‘discovering’ jazz and all that implies, but the simple truth is that the music that miles davis was making post ’68 is rather bloody good.

this particular era of the mans history (electric jazz funk rock fusion are words that people put together in various permutations) is none of that late night lazy smoke jazz, oh no, this funks and rocks like no other.

bitches brew, on the corner, tribute to jack johnson, and get up with it, all have a drive and a sonic brilliance about them that sounds remarkably vital and fresh, where the use of space and dynamics in the music makes listening an absolute joy and challenge at the same.

yes there are times that the patience is tested as one of the big name dudes goes off and does his thing, but when they hit a groove and all lock in, the results are un-fuckin’-believable.

then of course there is david axelrod and his epic, over the top productions.

i have always had a soft spot for the solo material i have heard not to mention his productions of cannonball adderly, and the still massively underrated lou rawls, but for a change, this week i have been realising (bordering on the obsessive if i’m honest) the excellence that is earth rot, and the recently reissued seriously deep.

one is all soft focus orchestral weirdness, earth rot, and the other, a groove filled set of disco synths, funked up bass lines, and driving drums.

both are in a word, essential.

so, there you have it.

i like jazz.

something i never thought i would be writing on ireallylovemusic blog.
