various singles : pop levi. king cannibal. speech debelle. ghost

pop levipolice $ign/terrifying

more of that up and at em 60s styled garage rock-n-roll that pop levi likes to throw out from time to time. eschewing the usual rush of radio friendly hooks that have been the basis for most of his output to date, this fuzzed up preview of the forthcoming album is a raw and lo-fi production (stripping back the studio excesses) that proves pop has been listening to the famous nuggets compilation.
vibrant and alive guitar pop music.

king cannibalvirgo/murder us

a new 12" from the man who like to scare and share his noir’d up productions.
deep bass lines, juddering dancehall type beats, and a rally to arms vocal by face-to-face make this a jolt of beats and noise, that would sit well alongside recent releases by the bug.
as for the flip side, murder us. this is far more enjoyable. something about the cold disconnected phased vocal line, "murder us", by jahcoozi is rather unsettling, but in a strangely appealing manner.
the whole package is typically uncompromising, and anything but easy listening, but no doubt kills on the dance floor, which i suspect is the whole raison d’etre for such a release.

speech debellego then, bye.

this came as a surprise.
a hip hop record that doesn’t bang and clatter, but soothes and invites the listener into the world of the story teller
instead this relationship break up track from the girls forthcoming album, speech therapy, is lyrically current with its facebook jibes, and lily allen styled open heart confessions, making for a wonderful change from the usual junk of party hard, hate filled crap that seems to be the norm in ’09.
of course, the package is fleshed out with a pretty unnecessary electro’d up workout by esser, and house flavours by photomachine and el-b, but the real deal is the original.
excellent stuff.

ghostfreedom of thought ep

track list : way you feel, return journey, s’all good (feat. finale), feel pain, elevate (remix) feat. jehst and dj iq.

scratchy loops. samples. late night atmospherics.
the  return of the classic era of trip hop moods (can i mention dj shadow without people cringing yet ? )
headphone listening hip hop has not been on the ireallylovemusic playlist for quite a while, but this ep has proved that the genre is anything but out for the count.
ghost has released this 12" as a preview to the mans forthcoming album, freedom of thought, and i have to say, i have fallen hard for this.
perhaps it’s the consistent mood, the lack of any distressed casio keyboard riffs, but the music sounds wonderfully warm and welcoming yet the results are anything but dull.
even the manic over the top guitar solo hidden in the mix during the epic return journey is ear pleasing and that something i would never expect to enjoy in a hip hop track.
highly recommended.
