on a roll at the moment.
last week the rebotini and toob cds, this week this amazing slice of techno.
even before you drop the disc in the player, from the dark cover art alone you just know this is going to be a good one.
for their debut mix release, spektre are having none of that pictures of 2 blokes behind a record deck, no fluffy disco bunnies for this lot, oh no, instead the cover is black with a scarred skull across which bass loving insects crawl, dream catchers hang from horns, and a pair of disturbed eyes look out of their sockets to witness the effects of this cd.
it’s quite an eye catching image to say the least.
comprising of an hour long section from the live set that the spektre duo (paul maddox and richard wakely) played out at last years glade festival, this release on the fascinating veryverywrongindeed label (best record label logo since fax records perhaps) seems to be hitting all the right spots. the mix puts together the lads various releases to date that they have put out via various labels, drops in a remix of a track by andre crom, and basically makes for a compelling hour of pounding electronic music.
of course, there are 128k mp3s of this set flying around the wire, but i have to say, this music makes all the more difference when played at a volume that hurts the stereo system, meaning that full blown hi-fidelity stereo quality is essential given that the attention to detail in the sonic production is wonderful. incorporating bass lines that thunder and roll, clicks-n-bleeps adding welcome instances of melody, and rhythmic loops that will have surely forced any glade punters within listening distance to submit to the lure of the nightmarish throb. naturally, such treats are to be expected in these post minimal techno times, but the additional overdubs of treated vocal samples, grey skinned atmospherics, and twisted aural extras, make this an album to come back to again and again, as indeed i have, since it became part of my life.
here’s a one word twitter friendly review : essential.
