black daniel – chelsea’s teardrop

not sure about the choice of the name given the glut of bands named black this and black that around at the moment.

however, one small fact within the press release made me dig this out again and give the new electro-rock a little more attention.

you see black daniel is the new project from the folks who made the medicine 8 album.

remember them ?

nah of course not, only i do.

they were signed to regal (pre lily allen days when regal were an interesting major label imprint), released dance music that had an edge. in other words, rock music that danced, or dance music that rocked. that old state of confusion.

i liked medicine 8, even if most just heard it and said, "big beat/chemical brothers rip off merchants"

so the new stuff ?

well, there is still a dance throb underneath the sleaze, but black daniel are reviving the glam beat with this their debut release.

glitter guitars stomp and screech, megaphoned vocals sing the lazy lyrics, and quite frankly, the band revive the stomp  brilliantly.

b-side, hard times on the way, (also the name of the bands forthcoming album), is as impressive with its phased stun guitars, cheap midi’d synths, and  drawled treated vocals.

some hook heavy hooligan chants even make me hope that perhaps the influence of earl brutus may have at last surfaced, but there is no way i am ever going to compare a band on the strength of one single to the mighty earl brutus, still the thought lingers.

time for a cliche : one to watch.
