an explanation as to why the blog has gone so quiet.
there are 2 main reasons.
the first of which is down to the complexity of posting to the blog in 2023.
back when i first set up the wordpress version of the site i was able to use a desktop application, ‘livewriter’, to generate the posts, and then once ready hit the button, and via some tech gubbins, the post would magically appear in its correct form without any fuss.
then bit by bit, things got more complicated.
microsoft pulled the plug on the application.
i found an alternative version, and that was great for a couple of years, but of course that too got pulled.
then my little server hosts who were always on hand to help out with small scale technical enquiries sold up shop to a big name hosts.
my little site was ported over onto a shared server without too much trouble, but the new big name hosts were more security aware, and blocked such desktop applications from uploading pre-designed posts due to possible security holes.
this meant the only other option was to use the actual wordpress dashboard, which to be honest i have always found to be an absolute pain for a simple text based site with its insistence re ‘blocks’ of content.
at some point last year when i felt the urge, i decided to look into emailing in posts, something i had actually done previously, but again, there were issues re settings in the backend i.e. the lack of access to the cron functionality (my previous hosts again setup a cron job to by pass the weirdness of the wordpress configuration), so, that option too has been so far restricted.
i have tried many times to get to the bottom as to why the embedded wordpress functionality re picking up emails doesn’t work, but as yet, i have yet to get a working solution.
the other reason is much more simple to explain.
the era of music blogs like this getting access to promo prereleases has all but gone.
given i have not worked now for over 5 years (my choice – kind of), means that i have a very restricted budget.
basically, i very rarely get to listen to new music, other than stuff by my usual faves (obvious if you have read this site for any length of time).
please note – this is not a complaint.
when i first set up ireallylovemusic it was all about posting about the weird and wonderful things i found in the charity shop bins, and then over the years things changed way beyond my expectations.
well, now they have changed back.
if i do manage to get the email thing sorted, and/or, i get used to using the wordpress gui, then i may indeed get back into the groove.
because as you’d expect, the charity shop thing is still very much alive and well in 2023, despite the glut of ‘cd revival’ articles of recent times.
onwards
