billy larkin and the delegates - organ grooves and soul brothers
basically if you have heard jimmy smiths rip roaring hammond organ groove monsters ('the cat') and you like them, then let me introduce you to billy larkin and the delegates. originally a trio (billy - organ, mel brown - drums, hank swarm - guitar) they released an album before hooking up with clifford scott who added his tenor sax lines over the bands tight jazz licks. while some of the 24 tracks, compiling the best of the bands 6 albums recorded between '64 and '68, do veer off into the fairly muzak vibe of jazz-lite there are some killer funky loops in action, especially the breakthrough hit 'pigmy' - featured here in both parts, the happy clappy soulful sax'ed up 'don't mess with bill', the shoe shuffling funk of 'g'won train' as well a few choice cover versions - 'hold on i'm coming', 'dirty water', 'harlem shuffle' and the perennial fave 'sunny.'
all in all - for 75 minutes this compilation is gonna make you shake your rump a little, bop your head from side to side and generally make you feel mighty fine.
good stuff.
