we are scientists - with love and squalor

are we fed up with short fused, angular post punk guitar dominated froth yet ?

on the evidence of this album, the answer is an outright declaration of 'no!'.

this hotly tipped trio from nyc are getting plenty of attention from all the right places, radio airplay and are generally going to have a great 6 months following the release of their spiky (spot the cliches part 43) debut album. while there are many overly familiar styles dipped into, the sheer forceful glee and obvious passion that the band projects, makes for a wonderful 36 minute blast. one minute it's all bloc party styled punk-funk, 'cash cow', 'lousy reputation', and recent single 'the great escape' being of particular note, next we're into full-on fuzzed up indie rock, 'callbacks' like it's 95 all over again. things even veer, dangerously, towards pompous 80's radio pop with 'textbook', luckily, the off centre chorus is a really nice touch for headphoners and distracts the grey cells from recalling which abomination that this reminds me of.

while the album probably wont hit any of the end of year roundups, this has become a firm favourite in recent months for when i just want some classy old school indie rock. after all, insanely catchy songs with lots of bass line action, noisy guitars and some nice lyrical twists will always win me over on a grey and miserable day.

oh, people tell me the website is fun.
