superdrag - regretfully yours
this got a fair push when released. one track was playlisted on radio one's evening session. and damn right too. this is great. fuzzy guitars clash with harmonies and do battle for 3 mins. imagine the beach boys clashing with my bloody valentine guitars on a summers day. cant recommend this high enough.
superdrag - last call for vitriol
so several years later i find out that superdrag at still going and signed to arena rock. just as arena get uk distribution.
umm ..and like .. things are still spot on thankfully .. the harmonies and songs are as sweet and full as ever and hang in the memory long after the final cut is complete - ok - the wall of guitars and fuzztone are toned down a tad and dont fill the sonic envelop quite as much as before, but hey a little derivation from the old ways is a good thing, tis nice to have the band progress.
there are still the full-on tracks, for example 'i cant wait' coming over like a 70's powerchordsblues rocking trio, and 'feeling like i do' with the bands trademark fuzzwarmth with its my bloody valentine clashing with the beach boys at a sonic youth party - damn i love it..
but there is more depth and style to the quiet mellow tracks than previously, possibly why superb opening acoustic uplifter 'baby goes to 11' features lo-fi hero bob pollard, and 'way down ..' harks back to the glory days of the lemonheads heights.
several tracks are completely in line with jason falkner/brendon benson sanctioned power pop. the guys have fine honed their craft to a superior level.
oh, and the packaging is cool, sticking with the whole cigarette theme of the bands name the cd is packaged like a matchbox. and looks superb.
get the impression i'm quite taken with this ..
i am. lots.
