one day as a lion - ep

after the original collapse of rage against the machine, word went around as to the bands singer, zack de la rocha, making beats and noise with dj shadow.

i was rather looking forward to hearing their groove, but so far the results of that unusual tag team up has yet to see the release schedule.

instead this quick fire forceful 5 track ep is the product of zack and his pal jon theodore from mars volta.

the template is pretty solid throughout making this particular listener wonder if the time is right to dig out his old nu-metal collection as zack still likes to lay down his singing one minute and in yer face raps next while drums clatter, guitars clipped and fed back, and bass lines are distorted.

the closest connection i’ve got down for this would be the brilliant, and therefore ignored, one inch punch hip-hop/dirty rock collaboration that justin warfield and tim simenon made many years ago, but with more attention being paid to the ever impressive live in the studio sounding drums that sound massive.

i suspect the lyrics are deeply intense to match the angry music as they are printed to devour in full, but i’m currently far too busy moshing.

really good stuff for those moments where an adrenalin surge is the order of the day.
