monster magnet - monolithic baby
a few years ago this lot were pushed and promoted as the saviours of rock by one of the major labels. shame that no-one took any notice. suspect it was all a matter of timing as the bands sound is not that far removed from the power driven rock of audioslave that found favour with critics and sales towards the end of 2003. the people that bought that album would do wise to grab a piece of this bands action.
and now they are back after a slight line up change and according to the info provided a lot of soul searching, on a new label, but i suspect the band game plan remains the same :
"match black sabbath power riffs with modern grunge production and simple catchy melodies"
job done then.
massively addictive basic chugga chugga riffs and pumping bass lines means that certain songs on this album stand out and hold the flow well, the title track and the single 'unbroken' both being particularly strong.
with titles such as 'slut machine', 'supercruel', 'ultimate everything' you just know that this is going to pump the rock quota to the max. matched with elements of hardrocking 70's, not one for the hair rock revival i found this to be great fun, and with the powerful vocals by the bands mainstay david wyndorf, hard riffs and uptempo grooves this is not a laid back soft rock package. spacerock moods and cliched rock lyrics which do vere into cringesome territories from time to time (and therefore adding an element of intentional humour ?), but with the fun quotient raised to the max then who cares.
monster magnet vs the darkness. no contest.
opposites do not always attract in every scenario.
monster monster.
