mommy and daddy - live how you listen
the normal meets early human league at a bass players convention and let rip ..
using a drum machine from the inner demons of electroclash, and a seriously fuzzed up/processed bass guitar to provide minimal elements of melody lines, this cooler than thou duo (vivian sarratt and edmond hallas for all you detailfreaks) are sparking off a new strand of minimal instrumentation sonic experiments in the epicentre of current cool nyc.
some works gloriously well ('what is the function'and 'the meeting').. some doesn't ('roundhouse robot'), with their driving beats and insistent lyrical demands
'conjugate to the 808' (as declared on crowd pleaser 'the meeting'), indeed sir, has someone been relistening to early nitzer ebb perhaps?
the split nemesis of shouted/screamed vocal duties is a bonus as this adds to the sometimes limited sonic styles. she has a sharp debby harry style. he is johnny lydon. an obvious connection but when you hear this, and you should, you too will have the same thoughts - so no point in being in denial that's his voice, he does it well. so accept it.
you would think that there is not a lot you can do with just a bass and beatbox .. even if they have hired bigname producers to tighten the sound and add a sparse splattering of sonic tweaks.
the fashion scenesters are going to lap up this herion chic groove monster. and make no mistake there are tracks that rock and groove in a very dirty seedy way.
where to go from here though ?
