the mighty stars - girls girls girls ep
something must be in the water.
another week another take on the long lost c86 sound.
before i discovered the glorious noise of run dmc/public enemey/eric b and rakim in 1987 i thought that real bands were of the primitives/darling buds/fuzzbox variety. and lo, despite the fact that the guys in this band have probably never heard any of the above, their style/sounds harks back to those innocent indie guitar pop summer days.
opening track 'brian wilson' has all the makings of such a revival. sharp melodies, crisp upbeat instrumentation, but the highlight has to be the handclaps .. nice touch.
second track 'girls girls girls' - girls being the reason for many guys to join bands makes this an interesting declaration of intent. more old school indie pop to a rousing chorus, a highlight. the rest of the ep has a fine set of melodies and guitars, and in one case 'lets play' even has a gold blade style call-response over its chunky guitars.
all in all a nice diversion from the angst ridden indierock of late,
as this is a mighty damn fine sunny day soundtrack.
