lori carson - the finest thing
new yorks lori carson has been around a while, she has been involved with several well known projects such as golden palominos, material and other bill laswell projects, as well as various film scores. which when you hear her delicate serene vocal style across these 8 tracks you will understand just how film execs have fallen under loris spell. lori has described the desire to make something beautiful with this album, and in that respect she has succeeded, totally. comprising of several long drawn out quiet ambient tracks the album drifts and floats by, which if in the wrong mood can actually be completely missed, but, when the soul requires a more soothing, warm hug of an album, i suggest you reach out for this record and immerse yourself in the delicately plucked acoustic guitars, subtle synthetic layers, and layered harmonies.
admittedly, there is little variety across the album, which may bring out accusations of it being a little too like aural wallpaper, but i suggest that this is actually the desired effect and that lori knows exactly what she wants, a completely out there on its own style that no-one else is currently really doing. yes, there are plenty of girls with guitars singing their songs of lost loves of course, but fortunately, i would never associate this album with that coffee bar friendly volume shifting dreariness as loris voice is of such a gorgeous sunday morning nature that the album cannot fail to win over the most hardened of souls.
