exit52 - dandelion ep
2 brothers, peter and david, from manchester make music together, and there is no influence from the beatles. result.
described as 'art pop' these 4 tracks feature weird sounds and classic pop structures for those who like dark nights and grey skies..
headline track 'dandelion' has a big dig towards nick caves dark gothic styles, a gritty death knoll type of atmosphere, with its Theremin, church organs, and twang guitar makes this a fascinating opener that would match any intense cinema experience. in fact if the x-files were still running then the band would be on the producers hitlist for soundtracking the opening scary scene .. good stuff. 'nineteen eighty three' continues with the dark moods, 80's style gothic bass lines and phased guitars compete against an out of place tambourine beat. 2 tracks and i am enthralled, yet concerned over the fact that this is definitely verging on a goth revival.
that is until the vocals of third track 'meow' kicks in. falsetto voices in rock/pop rarely impress me, and this is no exception, like an damon albarn experimenting with his voice (another one who likes to try the falsetto range) this one doesn't grab me, despite the excellent sci-fi sounds and guitars. guess it's just a personal preference as the final track also has falsetto vocals. a real shame as the first half of the ep had me very impressed and looking forward to hearing more ..
still reservations aside this band have a new/old sound that shows promise, lets see what happens as they travel down their chosen route.
