yppah - you are beautiful at all times
released in the midst of crimbo chaos 2006, this
wonderful album needs to be given some more attention out there i think.
yppah ("yippah" to make it
easier to ask for at your local record shop) is, in the real world, a young
texan called joe corrales, who alongside his well worn instrumental hip hop
records has obviously a love for layered guitar music a la my bloody
valentine as these 11 tracks easily prove.
the fundamental scope of this debut, is of course
easy on the ear hip hop styled drum loops, on top of which joe has added
carefully crafted layers of instrumentation. so in the mix, are echoed piano
parts, old school sounding keyboards, fat and warm bass lines and guitars.
guitars, which are often heavily processed, not in an industrial mtv processed
manner, but in a more natural, shoegazing manner making this a rather
wonderful 34 minute headphone treat.
of course, if you, like me, put this album on
while not really paying attention, then the music can come across as somewhat
slight and maybe even inconsequential, however, this is misleading as the
attention to detail within the soundscapes is very impressive. the scattershot
drums interacting with the stereo phased swirling noises during cannot see
straight, the stripped down bass funk of the minimalist beauty that
is in my drink, or the supremely melodic closer longtime
(recalling the early beatbox/acoustic guitar experiments of moshi moshi
artist matt harding) being a select
choice of many such highlights giving an indication that yppah is a
name to look out for in coming years.
so in summary : a real treat for those that happen
to take a chance on this understated release.
