the heavy - that kind of man ep
track listing : that kind of man, coleen,
easier
the debut release by the heavy,
on the ninja tune affiliated counter records label, hits the
ground running determined to make a very quick impression.
no nice easy on the ears intro, no build up, oh
no.
instead as soon as the laser hits the digital
bumps, the opening track bites hard with a riff and a hard as nails drum loop.
coming from the west country, the band negate any traditional associations,
and rip into the world of deep southern funked up soul music of the 60s and
70s variety.
the results are dramatic and fantastic, making
such comparisions to the music of tv cop shows and beastie boys
instrumentals an easy and obvious reference point, with the results coming on
strong as a tag team collision between the urban grit of the
professionals and the pimped up starsky and hutch
however, alongside the excellent instrumental
backing, the 3 piece band have a singer, swaby, with a voice
from the gods, sweet and soft, hard and raw that matches the sexual swagger
perfectly.
and all this excellence is on evidence within the
9 minutes contained here.
the myspace hangout is filled with various coded
messages alluding to a back up bunch called the heaviettes, and lots
of reference to the ways of the old world of blues and soul.
so one can only imagine how wonderful this band
are live as this is a raw undiluted slow burning sound, with little connection
to the polished hybrid that permeates the radio airwaves in 2007.
all thats left to say, other than track this down,
