kid koala - your moms favorite dj

tunrtable whizzkid kid koala continues to prove that to make an album all you need are a couple of fine record decks and a massive sodding record collection. basically the 2 tracks (plus one extra hidden track of course) that form the 33 minutes are snippets from all manner of records cut-n-paste to make a new form, even using various introduction chunks kid koala makes the samples actually form new sentences in an almost comedy sketch manner. ok, the whole idea of scratch albums isn't exactly new, nor even that fashionable in 2006, as other sceneleaders go off in search of the new crunk/snap/hyphy beat, but it is rather splendid to hear someone digging in the dusty crates and making such a record that refuses to take itself too seriously.
thankfully amongst the cut-ups, are beats and loops to make the head nod and the body rock. the first 15 minute set, 'left side', is mainly based upon scratched up old jazz boogie woogie piano riffs and is a riot of colour, whereas the other chunk, 'right side', is a lot more rock-n-roll sounding with guitars being chopped and mashed in a more frat party manner.
of course, this is an album to be played a few times and laughed along with, but for those that love to hear vocal snippets scratched up over and over and a few fine beats, this album is going to be a blast, a short blast, but definitely a blast.
