coldcut - man in a garage

second track to be lifted from the duos long awaiting new album, 'sound mirrors'. for those that heard and loved the style of the previous single, 'everything's under control' are going to have issues with this totally different type of noise. coldcut have pulled back from the brink of their passion for cut-n-paste dance beats and crafted a truly wonderful song. a proper song with melody, harmony and a chorus all wrapped up with some spot on lazy vocals by john matthias. forged out of electronically enhanced laid back swamp blues groove and a jittery clickety click drum track the vibe is one to soundtrack any headpains and lonesome evenings - fantastic.

of course, alongside the normal album version, there are several revisions. firstly, there is the snap ant version where the chilled moods of the original are replaced by a more urgent punk funk noise, with an almost devo-esque call-response vocal hook and some of the best scary monsters era bowie off kilter guitars to add to overall jarring effect. very different - very very good. then getting back to the more normal ninjatune style, bonobo does his beat fleshed out version which does little to the original other than upping the tempo, adding more rhythm, and twisted the vocals around a little. a dance floor filler without a doubt however.

next, daedelus steps up to the mark and totally fucks around with the original to the point of no return where all manner of mad midi laptop fuckery opens his 4 and half minutes of sonic chaos. there are times, that despite the vocals being left intact, you feel that you are experiencing 3 different songs all at the same time - the original, some delicate chamber music as a foundation, and then the broken noises that have been strapped on top. making the hydraulic version for fans of four tets more adventurous experiments.

and then to finish off the package there is chart friendly lemon jelly remix who have taken the chilled groove and added a far more cinematic feel, expanding on the slide blues guitar part and fleshing the sound out with some very tasty synthetic strings. gorgeous.

so there you have it - a full set of remixes - one for every mood.

just like the album really.
