prince po - the slickness
following the classic danger mouse/jemini album on lex, danger mouse has been given the all clear by the label bosses, to sort out another album with another old schooler who deserves more time in the hip hop spotlight. this time he has teamed up with prince po (aka prince poetry), of classic 90's duo organized konfusion, where the other partner in crime was non other than pharoahe monch.
what is different this time though, is that the production duties across the 12 tracks are split between danger mouse, madlib, jel, j-zone, richard x, and prince po himself which makes for an interesting insight into the differences of these underground hip hop heroes. there is the radio pop friendly grooves of 'love thing' (danger mouse) with its smooth 70's soul funk thing, to the hard and weird beats of 'too much' (madlib), to the freaky off the wall electro future funk of single 'hold dat' (richard x), featuring backing vocals from jemini and rell.
all in all making the album sound like a collection of tracks as opposed to a classic flowing album as there are severe sonic differences between the producers. which after a few listens is to is to the albums advantage as each track is an individual highlight depending on the current mood, almost like a greatest hits collection !
prince po's delivery is sharp and tight, and in places downright hilarious ('meet me at the bar') and matches the varying styles with superb effect. so while this album probably wont make end of year lists a la 'ghetto pop life', it will definitely make for a fine addition to anyone's collection who likes their hip hop tight and right.
no filler content allowed. no skits. just dirty beats, weird samples and flowing rhymes.
who needs more than that ? i certainly dont.
