heartsrevolution - debut ep
now this is how to get some blog love and attention.
a few weeks ago i received a small
package that had no details as to the source, the
package included a small plastic box, with a unicorns-n-hearts
logo on it.
when the box opened, small silver
shiny hearts flew out, to reveal a small golden key, and a piece
of paper advising that i was to soon receive a little piece of
magic.
who ? what ? where ? when ?
nothing other than i was number 32
out of 100.
the mystery remained
unanswered until yesterday, as another, much larger, parcel
awaited my attention when i arrived home.
this time the package contained a
solid box with a padlock.

15 minutes later after i remembered
where i had put the key, i got into the magical mystery box.
so rather than me describe the
contents.

as you can see, it’s stufffed with
sugar rush pleasures, toys, stickers, badges, oh and the cd
advising that via the myspace address the band could be called
heartsrevolution.
in 7 years of ireallylovemusic
i have never received anything quite like this.
so, now the people behind this
budget busting adventure had my attention, what about the music
?
well you know it wasn’t that long
ago that most unsolicited personally distributed cd-rs were of
the guitars in a garage band type of recordings, most of which
ended up unloved.
however recently, i have noticed
that the tide has turned, and most of the music i now get
involves cheap synths, easy to program drum machines, and makes
me smile a lot more.
thankfully, the three tracks here
are very much of that ilk, involving ed banger
styled overdriven digital noise, lo-fi treated vocals,
and several hooks from glitter heaven.
for a start, opener choose your
own adventure (c.y.o.a!) is absolutely brilliant.
coming on strong like some mad team
up with ninja from go! team sliced
with clor styled electro’d up disco and some
wonderful choppy cut-n-paste guitars for the saturday night
indie rockers.
the song has radio hit stamped large
and proud through the nu-rave excess.
domino cuts back on the
rock element (though very delicately in the mix is a excellent
guitar solo), and head for the future with an instrumental
bladerunner styled ambience of synths and skinny drum
machines.
as the melody of domino is
so beautiful, the band decided to recycle it for prism
effect, this time dropping more of those phased and stunned
vocals (quoting classic david bowie in a
miss kittin style) and topping
off the song with an appearance by internet hero cory
kennedy to make the cold hearted robotic electro
production warmer and rather special despite its electro-hipster
leanings.
easily the best unsigned record i
have heard this year, and that’s my honest opinion before i
start digging into the chemically enhanced saturated
goodies currently all over the kitchen table.
