glideascope - with strings attached ep
triphop. a much maligned genre.
yet here we have one artists quest to maintain the spirit and the soul of the groove. opening with 'devushka (beautiful) stirring epic strings (to be expected i guess !), deep basslines, snippets of soulful vocals looped and echoed, birds tweeting. all very early massive attack. while it doesn't breeak any new boundaries it does exactly as described. mellow. downtempo. beautifully executed and would soundtrack many a decent ad campaign/travel program.
the addition of the birds sounds though does date the track .. next up we get an interesting opening to 'what kinda madness' with a found vocal sample declaring an interest in all types of music 'reggae,ska,roots etc etc' and then a more insistent groove kicks in .. this could be far more attention grabbing if the beat has a bit more ooomph. rubadub this one up and this could rip it up .. it just cries out for an orb-type ska'd up groove... as it is its very nice and pleasant.
as are the rest of the tracks on this laid back and pleasant ep.
