beastie boys - the mix up
in case you weren’t aware, the old school hip
hopping punked up new yorkers are releasing an all instrumental album called the
mix up.
not remixes, or dubs of previous music, but a new
fresh clean off the block set of jams that they have laid down along with
their usual cohorts (hello money mark!).
the tracks, as you’d probably expect if you’ve
followed their progress over the years, are of the jazz-funk variety,
with a few side steps into dub, and 70s rock.
in fact, as they have done so in the past with
their excellent videos, the most obvious mental connection for a lot of this
music is that a lot would suite any remake of a classic 70s cop tv show.
a spot on head nodding drum loop (live ! no
samples here), a slab of jazz based hammond organ, some distorted wah wah
guitars and away we go. the results are consistently excellent.
especially, if like me, you enjoy the type of
music that david holmes used to drop in the background of his
soundtracks. there is little to single out here, other than personally i
prefer the tracks where they drop in some of their love for dub reggae’d up
funk, as in the space echo splattered across suco de tangerina, and
the wonderful the gala event.
all in all a fine slab o’funk to soundtrack the
eventual appearance of the sunshine, making this album one that will be
pouring out of the cooler than thou restaurant soundsystems for many months to
come.
