akira the don's first ep

at last here we are.

having followed the adventures of the man called adam through his abrasive playlouder adventures, and the pill fuelled sonics of crack village we come to the mans true destiny - the debut release from the self proclaimed rap morrissey. with full colour comic book cover artwork sorted out by the man himself, even before we drop the disc into the player we are given a sneaky insight into the mans world of beards, red bikes, guns, and booze. hurray.

over theses 4 tracks we are subjected to a range of akiras hip hop style. there's the doom ridden 'john the baptist', the 2004 chas-n-dave sing-a-long fun of 'akiras the don's drinking song', the bass boom monster 'one bullet' and the radio one playlister 'liverpool' (remixed by the ever wonderful mothboy).

throughout the thin machine created beats (you can hear the limitations of cracked software being pushed here) we get to hear of all sorts of akira's worldly wise insights, with an air of complete openness and non-bravado that is not usually associated within the genre beats and words making the listener actually want to follow the wordplay and get inside the emotions being offered up. naturally, as is the case, akira is a classic case of dark and light moods all wrapped up in a mess of samples. never has this been more obvious as following the intense john the baptist ('fuck you god') we are treated to the ultimate crossover novelty hit with its easy childrens tv melody and booze ridden chorus.

4 plays in and you'll love-hate the fucker in equal measure.

for me though, the standout track is 'one bullet'. produced by dj slepton the track combines a superb deep-n-dark bass line that quite literally shook ireallylovemusic's house foundations. adding the moody sitar samples to the phased/doubled up politically vibed up vocals, this straight up hip hop track shows the real potential on offer. fucking amazing track, with the usual revelations of obsessions over wu tang, weed, nike, and guns but also with declarations such as 'only takes one bullet to kill the president' and 'we deserve a fucking jihad' it's obvious that akira is definitely going to attract some serious drama in the near future.

result.

the final track on the ep has a mad distorted looped up synth line, sped up vocal samples and a sharp distorted delivery this is the easy choice for evening radio play. it's catchy, funny and downright funky. a perfect ending to the ep basically.

oh, and just so you know. usa major player interscope are involved. so, soon enough, the world is going to catch onto the mans talent, so why not pledge your allegiance to the don now, you know it makes sense.
