second album where the previous samples and loops man has gone all acoustic, having renounced his previous style, fink appears to be getting a lot more love and recognition given that one of the album tracks, this is the thing<\/EM>, has already been heard by millions of people via a high profile advertising campaign.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
also, this time around, the simple raw instrumentation has been given a widescreen production by lambs<\/STRONG> andy barlow<\/EM>.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
to be honest, as much of this album is so simple and stripped back, it’s hard to figure out exactly what andy could have done. <\/FONT>though the subtle strings and slide guitar on opener, troubles what you’re in <\/EM>are very chilling and special, and the delicate layered vocals that are dropped in from time to time are very special.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
for an album that is so laid back, it’s actually a shame then that the best track happens to be the one that fink<\/STRONG> gives it the full band production. blueberry pancakes, <\/EM>has the addition of a more uptempo drum and bass foundation, along with a nice slab of post punk choppy guitar, making the 4 minutes stand out as an essential track to be given single release. <\/FONT>very special stuff indeed.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
the rest of the album doesn’t quite reach the same level of excellence again, but i am very aware that on a future hang over heavy sunday morning, this quiet album is going to become one of my very best friends as the sheer beauty of finks<\/STRONG> ruffed up sultry vocals and bruised acoustic guitar proves that the singer songwriter genre doesn’t have to be populated with total elton john sanctioned crap.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
