mink lungs - i'll take it
and so onto the bands second album.
the cover is interesting, a picture of a girl about to swallow a blue pill, surrounded by garish concentric circles. is this a reference to the matrix situation, once you take the pill there's no going back ?
there is definietly a similar aspect to this bands take on the well trodden alt.rock template. once you expose yourself to the off-kilter melodies, the surreal lyrics, the jarring sonics styles that clash into one another then you may never want to listen to another emo disc again.
i recently read a fairly disparaging review of this lp. i completely understand. the reviewer concerned probably only listened to the lp 5/6 times. this band requires time and dedication, but once the effects of the associated blue pill start to take effect then its well worth all the effort.
17 tracks in 45 minutes. only 3 tracks over 3 minutes the rest stream into one another and fly at you in constant dissaray abandon. for a long time this can be rather overwhelming but slowly (as with the first lp) the listener starts to focus on the easier aspects of the songs and with each subsequent listen more and more of the tracks become highlights.
i have seen comparisons to early pixies. nope. dont go with that one iota. this lot are far more entertaining, challenging, enjoyable than that overrated emotionally cold "legendary" band, but if the comparison brings in new listeners then hey ..
where this is different from the first lp is in the sounds, they have cranked up the crunchy guitars and there is a lack of drop dead classics that were present on the first lp (there is nothing that matches the simplistic beauty of 'blue and creme car' for example). but, for anyone wanting a over the top, genre defining, sonically intense alt.rock journey - you cant go far wrong taking the trip with this band.
just be warned, there's no going back .. (after the required 10 listens !)
