why ? - the early whitney ep
a 6 track 20 minute ep from a solo member of the anticon gang.
the pr declares on the sticker on the cover to file under rock and hiphop, hmmmmm...
well, this being my first foray into the anticon world i had high expectations. i wanted weird loops, messed up samples and strangeness abounds.
what i didn't expect was 6 slight mellow laidback lo-fi songs sung sweetly and coming over as some classic long lost lou barlow off cuts, subsequently i was not overly enamoured from the offset.
but, i dropped the ep onto the end of the themselves remix cd on to a minidisc, and found myself going back to this 20 minute ep far more than was good for my md player. somehow the easy song structures got under my skin and decided that they needed more exposure before i wrote them off and filed as 'interesting'.
so, what now?
quite simply this is wonderful round the campfire acoustic sing-a-long stuff. and, yes there are subtle elements of hiphop hidden deep, for example there is a 20 second scratchathon of a morning cockerell wake up call at the end of 'darla', which is funny, and pretty damn funky, which against all odds works well in this surreal setting.
interesting. and hugely enjoyable.
but its not hiphop.
