dosh - s/t
as with why?'s recent ep this is a hard left turn from the usual world of hip hop culture and radio sanctioned grooves. this lp is an instrumental collection recorded in martin dosh's basement. having provided the beats for ninjatunes current hot property 'fog', over the last year martin has obviously caught the home recording bug, and, created a wonderful soundtrack to his own personality.
dosh is not a fully fledged member of the anticon mob, but as with buck 65 and sage francis if the anticon hear something that fits and appeals then they give it their seal of approval and set the beats free, to the mutual benefit to us all.
quirky, dirty yet funky downtempo beats and samples collide gently with martins jazzy loops mainly created on his trusty rhodes keyboard and old studio castofffs. be warned, this is no clean cut sounding production from the latest digital recording setup with up-to-date sounds and loops. instead, the organic sounds are covered in smokey dust and rusty analogue valves adding to the overall old school ambience.
there are elements of jazz on the opening track 'water turn off notice' that had me worried to start with, but, hang on in there and things get better by the minute. in fact, the concerns are quickly forgotten as the rest of the album falls into a decidely slow-n-low bassy hip hop groove making it far more listenable to this particular listener. highlights are coming on strong by the time my fave 'my girls ex-car' oozes out of the speakers, you should find yourself immersed into david lynch-esque lostworld of this sonic diary.
if someone could pass on my personal thanks to dosh for sharing it with the rest of the world, just let him know those hours in the basement were well spent.
